Standing Yoga Poses

This class is taught by:

Heidi Shaffer

Heidi Shaffer “accidentally” found yoga in 1992 while searching for a tension headache remedy. It worked the very first time! Over the years she has used yoga to work through PTSD, depression, a painful back injury, and several life changes, experiencing transformation on many levels along the way. Heidi began teaching yoga in 1996 and was certified in Integrative Yoga Therapy (IYT) in 1997. She received advanced training over several years in IYT and worked for IYT assisting at international trainings and in the local office. Studying with many local and national teachers, Heidi has taken yoga teacher trainings and workshops with Donna Farhi several times. She is also certified in Prenatal Yoga with Canadian Janice Clarfield. Heidi blends a breath-based Iyengar-based approach with intelligent, joyful creativity, modifying poses and meeting students where they are. Heidi loves yoga philosophy as it applies to our every day lives. She is currently studying philosophy in the Tantric tradition – an approach that embraces this amazing experience of being alive. Heidi founded Kent Yoga in 2001 along with Margot Milcetich and Mike Curtis. She especially loves working with beginners, individuals at mid-life and beyond, and pregnant women.
Yoga Standing Poses
Holding Steady in Times of Change
3 Week Series

Fall is a time of change and can be most imbalancing to Vata dosha. Everyone has some Vata, some more than others. When the world around us is rapidly changing we can become more aggravated, feeling spacey, unfocused, indecisive, cold, dry and anxious. Balanced Vata feels enthusiastic and inspired, able to adapt easily and more able to hold steady.

To balance our Vata dosha and feel less aggravated by the stress of change, we need to viscerally experience grounding, stability, warming and slowing down. The Yoga Standing Poses can most assist with this.

This 3-part series will begin with the foundational standing poses. We will then focus on finding peace and freedom in the side-bending, twisting and reversed standing poses. Finally, we will play with the one-legged balance poses. We will enjoy some experiential anatomy and learn related yogic philosophy that can support our lives on and off the mat.

This series will be valuable for newer yoga students and those with many years of experience including teachers. The building blocks are awareness, energy and, of course, form. Being open to trying a pose a little differently with gentle guidance and possibly hands-on support can help you advance your practice and become more adept at these core poses.

All body types and abilities are welcome! Please bring clothing layers to ensure your comfort during warm-ups, active practice, and savasana.

Heidi Shaffer Bish has two teaching certifications with Iyengar-trained Donna Farhi, and has attended and assisted at multiple posture-focused workshops over 25 years. She has a basic 200-hour certification in Integrative Yoga Therapy and has worked toward One Love Yoga’s 500-hour certification. Her favorite asanas are the Standing Poses.
